Recent broadcasts sometimes show AI-calculated win rates and point differences on screen. They're a handy way to see at a glance who's ahead, but there's a small knack to reading them.
POINT 01
The number is a "what if the AI kept playing" estimate.
The win rate is an estimate of how likely each side is to win if the AI kept playing near-best moves from that position. In human games, players can't always find the AI's best move. Even at 90%, the moves ahead are often very difficult.
- Win rate: the share of how likely each side is to win
- Point difference: the AI's expected final margin (only on broadcasts that show it)
- Around 50%: a difficult, even game
POINT 02
The "move just before" a big swing is the highlight.
When the win-rate graph suddenly jumps, the move just before it is the critical moment. A bad move can make it drop sharply, and a good move that punishes a mistake can make it soar. Hear how the commentator talks about that move, and the numbers come to life.
POINT 03
Listen alongside the commentator's sense of "easier to play."
Even when the AI says it's even, a commentator may say "White is easier to play." That's because the side with a plan that's easy for humans to follow tends to win in practice. Listening to both the numbers and the people makes watching much deeper.
