MIRUGO GUIDE/How tournaments work

How tournaments work

How does a title match work?

How a challenger is decided, and how title matches create stories.

LESSON 045 MIN READ
What to learn first

A title match isn't an event where the champion and challenger suddenly face off. A long story of climbing through preliminaries and leagues connects to the match against the champion.

POINT 01

From the preliminaries to the challenger decision, the drama has already begun.

In most tournaments, the challenger is decided through preliminaries, a main tournament, leagues and so on. The system differs by tournament, but it's enough to grasp the big picture: "choose one player to challenge the title holder."

POINT 02

In a series, watch not one game but the "changes."

In a series of several games, continuing drama emerges: a strategy that didn't work last time is changed, a player deliberately challenges the same shape, the leader changes how they fight. Look beyond the win-loss record at what changed from the previous game, and it gets even more interesting.

  • Check the current series score
  • Compare whether the opening is the same as the previous game
  • Feel the tension of must-win games, such as when a player is one loss from defeat

POINT 03

The number of days and time limits differ by tournament.

Some games finish in one day, others take two days. In games with long time limits, the story continues across a sealed move and breaks. Not every title match has the same format, so check MIRUGO's game details or the organizer's official information.
