MIRUGO GUIDE/Signs the game is ending

Signs the game is ending

What does "resign" mean?

Why games end before they are played out, and how to watch that moment.

LESSON 022 MIN READ
What to learn first

Resigning isn't "giving up"; it's the formal signal by a player who has read out the result to end the game. Even if it ends before the board is filled, the game is properly decided.

POINT 01

The game ends when a player judges there's no way to turn it around.

In Go, players read the score difference of playing to the end while the game goes on. A big group was captured, the territory gap grew, there's no catching up with what's left. A player who judges this can resign of their own accord.

END OF THE GAME

RESULTResign

An ending that accepts the result and shows respect for the opponent

POINT 02

"B+Res" means Black won by resignation.

"Win by resignation" in the result means the opponent resigned. Since stones weren't counted at the end, no point margin is written. W+Res means White won by Black's resignation.

  • Resigning doesn't mean the player is weak
  • It happens not only with big gaps but also with a small margin after reading everything out
  • In the post-game review, the move that changed the flow is often discussed

POINT 03

If it ends suddenly, rewind to "the last exchange" rather than the players' faces.

On streams, a game may end with a bow or a few words instead of a stone. Don't worry that you missed it. Go back a little to where the commentator began saying "this is decided" or "resignation is unavoidable," and you'll find the reason.

You don't need to memorize everything. In your next game, look for just one point from the article.
