Game results are written like "B+Res" or "W+0.5." They're short, but they pack in how the game ended.
POINT 01
"Win by resignation" means the opponent resigned midway.
A win by resignation (chuoshi) is decided when the opponent resigns rather than playing to the end. A large group was captured, or the gap became too big to recover. In positions like that, the player admits defeat. Territory isn't counted, so no point margin is written in the result.
Resignation is explained in detail in What does "resign" mean?
POINT 02
A "○.5-point win" was played to the end and counted.
When the game is played to the end and territory counted, the margin is written, like "B+3.5." The half point comes from the 6.5 points of komi added to White. The smaller the number, the closer the game; a "half-point win" is the narrowest possible margin.
- Win by resignation: decided by the opponent's resignation
- ○.5-point win: the difference counted after playing to the end
- Half-point win: the smallest margin. A close game undecided until the end
POINT 03
Imagine a player's character from their results.
Players with many wins by resignation may have the strength to settle fights in one go. Conversely, players with many narrow wins may be the type who keep playing tenaciously to the end. Looking at results on tournament and player pages, you'll gradually see each player's character.
